Bollywood Relationships Which Were Mere Publicity Stunts
Sushant Singh Rajput and Kriti Sanon may be paired opposite each other in Dinesh Vijan’s Raabta, but more than the film, it’s their alleged real-life romance that’s making headlines. While both of them continue to deny being in a relationship, their social media accounts have a different story to tell. Few weeks ago, SpotboyE.com had revealed that their ‘affair’ is a mere publicity stunt for the movie (Exposé: Kriti’s romance with Sushant is a big publicity gimmick!, July 12).

Sushant and Kriti aren't the only Bollywood jodi to have forged their relationship during the making of their film. Several other actor couples, in the past, took everyone by surprise when they drifted apart as soon as their movies released. Here are a few examples:

Ranveer Singh-Sonakshi Sinha (Lootera)

The two actors were reported to have developed a soft corner for each other while they were filming Lootera (2013). Soon their friendship turned into love and news of them being engrossed in each other on the sets began doing the rounds. It was around that time that Ranveer broke up with Anushka Sharma, thus adding fuel to fire. Their intimate scene in the film also created quite a buzz. However, soon after the movie released, the two went their separate ways.

Shahid Kapoor-Sonakshi Sinha (R...Rajkumar)

Reports suggest that love blossomed between the R...Rajkumar (2013) co-stars when they began shooting for the film, but became more evident once the two began promoting it. Their chemistry on Koffee With Karan (where they appeared together) was hard to ignore and was evidence enough that there’s something brewing between the duo. Their movie hit theatres and soon after the two actors moved on with other people.

Randeep Hooda-Aditi Rao Hydari (Murder 3)

Randeep and Aditi were said to have met on the sets of Murder 3 (2013) and hit it off instantly. However, rumours of them dating began doing the rounds just before the film was completed. With neither of them going on record to clarify their relationship status, buzz of the two being together only got stronger. The rumours stayed afloat as long as the movie was in theatres. Post that, the two were not spotted together.

Imran Khan-Shruti Haasan (Luck)

Kamal Haasan’s daughter Shruti made her Bollywood debut with Luck (2009) opposite Imran Khan, who was fresh out of the success of Jaane Tu Ya Jaane Naa (2008). After the intense outdoor shooting schedule of the film was over, news of Imran and Shruti going around came in. At a couple of events, Imran was spotted without his then girlfriend Avantika Malik, and that perpetuated the rumours. Soon after the movie released, Imran was back to being spotted with Avantika and Shruti began living in with South star, Siddharth.

Shahid Kapoor-Amrita Rao (Vivah)

Shahid and Amrita made their big screen debut together with Ishq Vishq (2003) and went on to feature in a few other films such as Vaah! Life Ho To Aisi and Shikhar. However, it was during the shoot of Sooraj Barjatya’s Vivah (2006) that rumours about the two being in a relationship began. Shahid was dating Kareena Kapoor at the time, but certain reports suggested that the two might be headed for splitsville due to Shahid’s closeness to Amrita. With the theme of the movie being on the lines of unending love, the makers made sure that the buzz about their relationship was maintained till the movie released. Well, the strategy worked and the movie was a big hit.

Ranbir Kapoor-Priyanka Chopra (Anjaana Anjaani)

Ranbir had just broken up with Deepika Padukone, and news about him seeing Katrina Kaif was still under wraps. The makers made good use of the opportunity and there began rumours about him dating Priyanka Chopra during the shoot of Anjaana Anjaani (2010). Both made it a point to not speak about the rumoured relationship. However, soon after the movie bombed at the box-office, the duo preferred to maintain distance. The two came back together for Barfi! in 2012.

John Abraham-Katrina Kaif (New York)

John and Katrina's pairing in New York (2009) was a unique one. Katrina was still going around with Salman Khan, and John had had a major fallout with Sallu after Baabul (2006) bombed. So it was quite startling to see John and Kat come together for the Kabir Khan film. However, their movie, more so, their romantic scenes got a lot of mileage once rumours of them getting really close off-screen began doing the rounds. But, the two drifted apart once the movie released.

Imran Khan-Genelia D'Souza (Jaane Tu Ya Jaane Na)

Imran and Genelia were dating others (Avantika Malik and Riteish Deshmukh respectively) when they began filming Jaane Tu Ya Jaane Na (2008). But that didn't stop the reports of them being a couple making their way into industry circles right before the release of their film. The film was important for the two actors since Imran was making his debut and Genelia was coming back to Bollywood after many years. The two kept mum about the alleged liaison till the movie released. Once it got a good response, the duo came out in the open about their respective partners.
